Sourdough Proves to be Another Comforting Carb

To be frank, I bought Sourdough: A Novel, by Robin Sloan as part of my Book of the Month subscription and it proved to be the perfect book to read during these lukewarm days when summer turns to fall. I have to admit, I fell pretty hard and fast for this book since like the main character, Lois, I’m in my 20s, I’ve had a mini quarter-life crisis, and I now work at a tech-focused company. (Unlike Lois though, I don’t have an engineer’s mind and I like food way too much to ever forget to eat.)

But back to the book…Sloan has crafted a great tale of self-discovery, ambition, innovation, curiosity, and bread making. I don’t know how, but Sourdough: A Novel, somehow combines the cooking knowledge of the Food Network, the craziness of a tech startup, and just a pinch of magical realism.

I started this book, not knowing anything about making or baking a loaf of sourdough, but I definitely ended the book hungry and craving carbs. I’d recommend this book for a quick and cozy weekend read when you need a lighthearted break from the 24-hour news cycle.
